Penguin Class - Year 6
Welcome to Penguin Class!
I hope you’ve had a fantastic summer and are feeling refreshed and ready for an exciting year ahead. Year 6 is a very special year filled with new challenges, opportunities, and memories to make. I am looking forward to helping the children learn, grow, and achieve their very best. Welcome back – I can’t wait to get started!

**Important Information**
- The weather is wetter and colder, please ensure your child has a coat and that it is named.
- Please also check all cardigans and jumpers are still named.
- Please ensure your child brings a water bottle to school each day and book school dinners online in advance.
Our PE days are: Monday and Thursday
Please come to school dressed in your PE kit on these days with earrings removed or taped and hair tied back.

Term 2 - Investigating our World.
What makes our planet unique?
During the Investigating Our World project, your child will study Ordnance Survey maps to write a description of the local area. They will learn about contour lines and revise six-figure grid references to locate features on maps. Your child will learn about the Prime, or Greenwich, Meridian and find out that Greenwich Mean Time, or GMT, is taken from the Prime Meridian. They will know that the Earth is split into 24 time zones and calculate the time in places worldwide. Your child will learn about climate zones, vegetation belts and biomes. They will find out that the climate and vegetation in an area determine the animals that live there. Your child will learn about the human geography of the continents and locate capital cities around the world. They will identify relative locations and use the scale bars on maps to find the distance between places. They will study the motorway network across the United Kingdom, learning how they connect towns, cities and transport links across the country.

**HOME LEARNING**
Please ensure that your child reads 5 times a week and that you are supporting them to login into Times Tables Rockstars and Ed Shed daily. Your child's login details can be found in their reading record. We will be monitoring this in class every Friday.
Spellings will be given to children on Fridays to be learnt by the following Thursday.
Homework will be sent out weekly, please encourage your child to complete.
